Without mediation, the image of happiness remains nothing more than what it is: an image, impotent and blind. Consciousness of unhappiness occasions reflection and with it the possibility of suspending repression. The name marks such a possibility and vouchsafes that which is named in the measured intimacy of its remoteness. As transition, the name represents the calling forth before which nothing may be identified.
